Courses


The AlterEurope Master's degree is in the field of European and international studies (areas of Humanities and social sciences and law, economics and management).

Location


Most of classes will take place in Saint-Etienne, at the Department of Political and Territorial Studies (DEPT) of the Université Jean Monnet (Tréfilerie university site).
Some courses will take place in Lyon (ENS de Lyon or Sciences Po Lyon). In the first year of the Master’s degree, the classes of the geography major take place entirely at the ENSL.

Travel expenses are not paid by the university.

Master 1 - Semester 1

 

4 Majors : Law / Economics-Business / Geography / Political Science

 

Unit 1 - Fundamental knowledge 1: Regional knowledge (9 ECTS)

– Thematic / introductory lectures (3 ECTS)
– EU institutions and policies (2 ECTS)
– Crossed perspectives on globalization in Europe, Middle-East and East Asia (2 ECTS)
– International trade relations between the EU and its neighbours (2 ECTS)

Unit 2 – Fundamental knowledge 2: Knowledge of the regional area and speciality languages (6 ECTS)

– Specialist languages: Arabic, Russian or Turkish (2 ECTS)
– Geopolitics of EU neighbourhoods (2 ECTS)
– Law of the Council of Europe (2 ECTS)

 

Unit 3 – Interdisciplinary methodological approaches 1 (9 ECTS)

– Introduction to research (1) (3 ECTS)
– Major Law: EU corporate law (3 ECTS) + Private international law (3 ECTS)
– Major Economics-Business: Macroeconomics and European economic policy (3 ECTS) + Introduction to economic innovation (3 ECTS)
– Major Geography: Quantitative methods in social sciences (3 ECTS) + Qualitative methods in social sciences (3 ECTS)
– Major Political Science: Governance and urban policies compared (3 ECTS) + Public policy (3 ECTS)

 

Unit – Tools and Applications (6 ECTS)

– Language 1: English, or French as a Foreign Language (3 ECTS)
– Major Law: Sustainable development policies (3 ECTS)
– Major Economics-Business: Sustainable development policies (3 ECTS)
– Major Geography: Spatial information and geomatics (3 ECTS)
– Major Political Science: Sustainable development policies (3 ECTS)
 

Master 1 – Semester 2

Unit 5 – Insights 1: Thematic knowledge (8 ECTS)

– Major EU external policies (2 ECTS)

 

Themed specialisation modules (select three from the options below) (6 ECTS):

– Substantive EU law
– Dynamics of the international legal order
– Economic geography
– Introduction to managing projects
– Introduction to research
– Economic policy and globalisation
– Geography theories

 

Unit 6 – Insights 2: Knowledge of the regional area and specialist languages (6 ECTS)

– Specialist languages: Arabic, Russian or Turkish (2 ECTS)
Seminar “Europe’s Mediterranean neighbours” (2 ECTS)
– Opening lecture by a visiting professor (2 ECTS)

 

Unit 7 – Interdisciplinary methodological approaches 2 (6 ECTS)

– Study trip (3 ECTS)
– Language 1: English, or French as a Foreign Language (3 ECTS)

 

UE 7 – Professionnalisation 1 (10 ECTS)

– Discovering careers (module without ECTS)

 

Choosing a module:

– Careers in research: research paper (10 ECTS) 
– Careers in intelligence gathering/monitoring and project management: Internship (two - four months) and internship report (10 ECTS)
 

Master 2 – Semester 1

Unit 1 – Specialist thematic and regional knowledge (12 ECTS)

– Specialist thematic and regional conferences (3 ECTS)
– The law applying to EU trade with neighbouring states (2 ECTS)
– Economic development and the European Union (2 ECTS)
– Environmental changes from the Arctic to the Mediterranean sea: resources, strategies, geopolitics (2 ECTS)
– Language 1: English, or French as a Foreign Language (3 ECTS)

 

Unit 2 – Lectures on the regional area and specialist languages (6 ECTS)

– Seminar on the EU’s Eastern neighbourhoods (2 ECTS) 
– Seminar “Europe’s Mediterranean neighbours” (2 ECTS)
– Specialist languages: Arabic, Russian or Turkish (2 ECTS)

 

Unit 3 – Specialist careers (12 ECTS)

Choosing a pathway:

 

– Research careers: Research seminar sessions selected by the student in connection with the research establishments and modules offered by the institutions linked to the masters programme—subject to the approval by the person in charge of the course (notably the seminar “European studies: Europe as a research object” [6 ECTS])

 

– Careers in project management:

– Lobbying and advocacy at the European and international levels (2 ECTS)
– Project management and methodologies (4 ECTS)
– European funding and international sponsors (3 ECTS)
– Professional project management in non-member countries (3 ECTS)

– Careers in intelligence gathering/monitoring:

– Lobbying and advocacy at the European and international levels (2 ECTS)
– Project management and methodologies (4 ECTS) 
– Geopolitical intelligence gathering/monitoring (4 ECTS)
– Information systems and security (2 ECTS)
 

Master 2 – Semester 2

Unit 4 – Research or internship dissertation (30 ECTS)

– Careers in research: individual research paper
 

– Careers in Project Management and intelligence gathering/monitoring roles: internship (4-6 months) and internship dissertation (2 ECTS)
